Water Use

This section of the site contains information about water use both as a system and as individual customers.  Some basic system-wide statistics are posted now but we plan to add more detailed information as time permits.

We currently read meters on a monthly basis but only bill quarterly.  One of the ways the monthy reading data could be used is to development an online system that gives customers access to their own water use data.  If you are interested in this type of project then please let us know.

Historical Water Use

fieldsdam_inletThe chart below shows monthly withdrawals dating back to 1964. The water system has expanded over time which has contributed to the increase in withdrawals along with the proliferation of irrigation systems. Some larger expansions include taking over Wylewood Water Works in the late 1980's and the construction of Great Hill in the 1990's. Water use in recent years has declined due to outdoor water conservation measures during the summer months. Winter use has also been lower than in previous decades which can be attributed to conducting annual leak detections, timely repair of known leaks and improvements in home plumbing fixture and appliance efficiency. How to use your water meter

E-mail Print PDF

Is there a leak? How much water does my dishwasher use? How many gallons per minute does my irrigation system use? These are questions your water meter can help answer.  We use your water meter to generate a bill each quarter.  A lot of things can happen during the quarter that will influence your water bill.  A leak could develop and go unnoticed until the bill arrives or a child returns home from school increasing your normal water usage.  This guide will help you locate your water meter, describe how it works and show you a few ways to make the most use of your water meter.

How much water does Topsfield use? Below is a chart that shows how much water was used on a daily basis for the past few weeks. The totals include all of the water consumed including water used by customers, leakage, flushing and fire fighting. The volumes on this chart are calculated using pump flow and tank level data from our control system. System demand is calculated by correcting withdrawal volumes for changes in storage tank levels.
