New water mains, hydrants and water services were installed along Ipswich Road, Pine Street and portions of Averill Street, Haverill Road, Mansion Drive, North Street and Woodside Road. The project was funded by water revenues and was done as part of a Massachusetts Department of Transportation road and drainge project. The water main work replaced over 7,000 feet of transite pipe that was installed in 1949 when the Town's water system was created.
There were several water main breaks in the project area in the last 10 years, particulary near the Mansion Drive intersection with Ipswich Road. The sparse placement of valves in the original system and piping design caused large areas to lose water service during the breaks. The benefits of the new system are:
- It completes a loop on Haverhill Road which should improve water quality for customers on Pine Street, Haverhill Road and Coventry Lane.
- The pipe diameter on Ipswich Road was increased from 8" to 12" to improve fire flows and reduce pumping costs.
- The new pipe material is more durable than the original pipe and is expected to last much longer.
