Hydrant Flushing Information

E-mail Print PDF

Hydrants are flushed twice per year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The flushing program is designed to remove sediment from the water mains and to check system fire flows. It also reduces stagnation in long dead end lines.  Customers in areas where there is little water use may notice higher chlorine concentrations during hydrant flushing season.

Due to the accumulation of sediment in the mains, flushing usually produces dark brown, even black, colored water while the hydrants are flushed and for a period afterwards. Customers are notified of the start of the project by mail and email. If you would like to receive the daily schedule updates via email please join our email list.

The flushing schedule in its entirety is posted online and can be found in this section of the website.
